I chose Folk and Fairy Tales
because I’m interested in the origins of fairy tales and how they became so popular
in our society. I also wanted to know the difference between folk and fairy
tales because I often get them confused, even though I know they’re two completely
different things. I’ve grown up watching Disney fairytales and reading picture books,
so I have a genuine interest in finding out more about these stories. I’m
hoping to gain more knowledge on unfamiliar fairy tales and folklore, make
connections, and find common recurring themes. My favorite fairy tale is
Rapunzel because I read the picture books in elementary school and she’s in
multiple movies that I’ve seen as a child. She was in “Shrek 3”, “Tangled”, and
“Into the Woods”, which all have a
different spin on her story and how she’s portrayed. But they all pretty much cover
the basics: her mother, who’s a witch, locks her in a tower, she has very long golden
hair, and a prince comes to rescue her. My favorite interpretation of Rapunzel
has to be “Tangled” because it had an
interesting plot and it was like a modern version of her story. Most of the
movie still kept the important elements of the story, but it’s animated and it
appeals to children so it can be easier to understand.
